Welcome to friends, families, and music loving community! We are so excited to put our amazing musicians on display in a friendly battle this evening. Our students have been working hard since the beginning of the year on creating unique and entertaining sets and their progress and hard work will be on display for you today!
We encourage you to cheer loud, clap along, and get up and dance if the music moves you to.
We have snacks and refreshments located right outside of the gym and hope you stop in for something to eat.
Today's Battle will be based on audience interaction as well as engagement. Each group will have their photo posted on our Instagram - @phs_instrumental_music - and the group with the most likes at 8 pm will be declared the winner and have a full music video recorded and published on our website and and social media.
Make sure to share your favorite group's photo with as many people as you can, and please enjoy Battle Of Rock Bands 2024!!

We're Groundwire, one of the pop performance ensembles at Portola High School this year!
We have two vocalists, Iliana and Sara, who are both extremely talented, and provide us with diversity in vocal style and range. Additionally, we have Sharim, our lead guitarist, who does not know music theory at all, but is highly skilled at what he does. On rhythm guitar and piano, we have Dana, who has experience in a lot of genres and styles, and can play just about anything you ask her to. On drums we have Bryan, who is always fun to hang out with, and who goes above and beyond on the drum kit. We are blessed to have our saxophone player Shion, who has been very versatile and is currently learning keyboard and guitar to fit the needs of the band. Our bass player, Megan, is very knowledgeable on music theory and helps to run all of the gear, making this band all the more functional.
With the exception of Bryan, who is only a junior, we are all seniors who have been involved with the instrumental music program since our freshmen year. We're really excited to finish out our senior year in the program, and look forward to covering and writing a lot of great music! Enjoy the set, and thank you for supporting the Portola High School instrumental music program.
Events like tonight would not be possible without the support and assistance of our parents and families. We would like to thank Lee Stewart, Raina Eujin Song, Krizen-Joi Aguilar, Erica Borquez, HyoJin Bae, Marie Claire Marshall and Lourdes Atienza for helping make this night happen! If you are interested in joining our community and continuing to build our events ask Mr. Traska or Mr. Distante about how you can get involved! Meetings happen once a month on Zoom and in person and we have positions of all levels.
The materials we have to support our students come in no small part from our families generosity. Every cable, amp, stage piece, speaker, and instrument the students have access to is thanks to your support. In order to keep our program reaching out to more students and to keep providing our students with the best possible music making experience we have an Amazon Wish List that we would gladly accept gifts from. The list can be found HERE.
We would like to thank our music program sponsors for making this year so successful! We would like to thank Paris Baguette, Fruit Design by Nesa, Ruff Cutz by Karl, Custom Design Tint & Wrap, CTU Services Inc., and the Chapman University Office of Diversity, equity, and Inclusion for their continued support!
Music is alive and well in Irvine, and that is in no small part thanks to patrons like YOU! Without an audience our music wouldn't have the same meaning and our program would not be as healthy and vibrant as it is. We truly enjoy seeing such a variety of students and musicians in our program and are grateful for the opportunity to provide them a space to share their art and passion with the public. Thank you for coming!
We would also like to thank Mr. John Pehrson, Jen Ochsner, Amy Paulsen, Steven Chai, and Brandon Emery for their support throughout the year, Mr. Leo Diego and the facilities staff for keeping our spaces clean and facilitating the evening, Ms. Samantha Sanford and the tech students for their work and facility usage, Mr. Adrian Rangel-Sanchez for the undying support, Jazmine Khaligov for the fantastic artwork, Mr. Andy Marshall for his assistance in making the sound magical, Jonathan Zuniga, Luke Thomas, and David Sauer for their expertise and ensemble coaching.
